Anvil Electronics

In late 1996 a group of local business people noticed an advertisement in The Border Watch inviting expressions of interest in establishing a greenfield site Dick Smith Electronics Authorised Stockist Store. After some discussion they requested further information and based on this decided to go ahead with the project and Anvil Electronics was born. The initial partners were Chris Ind, Damien Hrvatin and Stuart and Lynn Jackson.
A site was found in the "new" Post Office Complex and February 1997 saw Chris and Damien travel to Sydney to undertake training with Dick Smith Electronics. On their return the work began to shop fit and stock the store. After much work the store was finally ready for opening on the 27th of June 1997.
The new business flourished, fast gaining a reputation for friendly service and a large range of products. Originally stocking Dick Smith consumer electronics, Telstra mobile phones and Bosch power tools the range continued to grow with the business over the next few years. In 1998 Anvil Electronics was awarded both the state and national Stockist of the Year with Dick Smith Electronics.
Over the next few years Anvil Electronics continued to provide consumer electronics to the people of the Green Triangle area with some background changes within the business. Chris and his wife Kylie gradually purchased the other three shares in the business and continued running the store day to day.
In 2003 after attending the annual Dick Smith Electronics Stockist Conference Chris and Kylie decided to expand their product range, opening accounts with a number of electronics suppliers from around Australia, notably Jaycar Electronics. This decision proved to be merited when in 2004 Dick Smith advised that our services would no longer be required as they were changing their business model to a direct distribution through their own stores. New suppliers included Uniden (cordless phones, UHFs and GPS units), Crest (audio accessories), Force Electronics (mobile phone accessories) and Dynamic Supplies (printer inks).
Over the next few years Anvil Electronics continued to grow their base of suppliers to ensure customer needs were met. In 2005 Anvil joined the Leading Edge Electronics group, introducing brands such as GME (UHFs), Garmin (GPS units), HPM (power boards, security lighting and solar ornamental garden lights), Master Instruments (largest range of batterries in Australia), Kodak (digital cameras and photo printing kiosk), Palsonic (televisions), TDK (audio and computer media) and Topline (TV antennas and accessories). This mutually beneficial partnership with the Leading Edge Group continued until 2011.
In late 2011 with the Global Financial Crisis, the sale of the local Forests and a number of other factors influencing the local economy Chris and Kylie were forced to reassess their business model once again. Paying rent at the rate currently charged was not sustainable meaning the business either needed to close its doors or relocate. Following a discussion with Craig Smith and Jeff Shephard from Jaycar Electronics they decided that throwing away 15 years of hard work was not an option and the search for a new location began. After a few false starts the current site at 42 Margaret Street was purchased in February 2012. Then the real work started!
Demolishing the existing offices and building the new showroom and storeroom areas meant that 42 Margaret Street was home for all the Ind family and their many friends, family and supporters over the next few months. At the end of April 2012 the old store closed on a Thursday evening and a huge weekends effort saw the new store open the following Monday morning. Since then work has continued with merchandising of stock (including the 800 new lines introduced during the move) and finishing of the storeroom area.
Chris and Kylie would like to thank everyone who has been with us through this amazing journey and invite you all to continue to share in the growth of our locally owned and operated friendly electronics store.
